Trellis

Backing up your library

Where your audio and your database live, and how to copy the database safely.

Settings has an About section that shows both paths on this machine.

Your audio

The folder listed as Audio files. Pictures live here too, in _images folders beside the recordings they belong to.

The database

Everything Trellis knows that is not in the files. On an installed copy it lives at:

~/Library/Application Support/Trellis Music Library/db/trellis.db

Profile pictures sit next to it, in avatars/.

Copying it safely

Trellis runs SQLite in write-ahead logging mode, so a change you have already made can still be sitting in a companion file. Copying trellis.db on its own while the app is open can give you a backup that is missing the last of your work.

Let SQLite make the copy instead. It can run while Trellis is running:

sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Trellis\ Music\ Library/db/trellis.db ".backup ~/Desktop/trellis-backup.db"

Quitting Trellis first and copying the whole db folder works too, as long as you take the -wal and -shm files alongside the database.

Keep the live database on local disk. SMB and NFS do not work.

What a database backup leaves out

Your API key and the access tokens for libraries you have joined live in the macOS keychain. After restoring onto a different Mac, enter the key again in Settings and rejoin any shared libraries.
